Oelwein Food and Fitness volunteers coordinated a fun family day on June 2 at the Oelwein City Park.
Families participated in an active scavenger hunt where they visited displays and activities hosted by community organizations. Families learned about the farmers market, walking school buses and walking clubs, kayak safety, completed fitness activities like soccer and volleyball, and sampled locally grown vegetables. Families had to visit each station for a sticker which entered them in the drawing for prizes at the end of the event.

Lots of local spring veggies were selected to be the primary ingredients to make salads-on-a-stick.
At my station, I talked about the Pick a Better Snack nutrition program for grades K-3 and had an assortment of spring vegetables for attendees to make salads-on-a-stick.
I also provided information about the community food box program at the Wellness Center available through the Iowa Food Hub. For about $16 a week, a family can get a box of locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Five of these foods are produced on farms in Fayette County – can you find them?
At the end of the evening, the prizes were awarded and some people went home with wellness center memberships, fitness trackers, bikes and even a new kayak.
It was a fun evening. Great job Oelwein Food and Fitness!
