ACTIVE LIVING – Ashley Christensen

A big thank you to Decorah High School for participating in the 2016 Bike Rack Challenge. The students created TWO bike racks for the community of Decorah: one located at the Farmer’s Market and another located at Pulpit Rock Campground. Check out the awesome masterpieces that will benefit the community for years to come!


EARLY CHILDHOOD – Haleisa Johnson

Early childhood is the ideal time to establish healthy eating habits. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has granted Luther College’s Center for Sustainable Communities $300,000 to be used over the next two years to provide support to early childhood care environments in northeast Iowa.



Summer Library Programs Feature Wellness Theme
This year’s theme for the state wide Summer Library programs was “Ready, Set, READ!”. The theme focused on being physically active and eating healthy choices. I was invited to do programming at Wadena, Sumner, Nashua, and Ossian.

SCHOOL GRANTS FOR HEALTHY KIDS Are you looking for funding to support physical activity projects or nutrition initiatives for this school year? You’re in luck! Action for Healthy Kids is now accepting School Grants for Healthy Kids applications from Iowa schools for the 2016-2017 school year. Funding can be used to support initiatives such as:
•    Recess;
•    Play Space/Gymnasium Refurbishing;
•    Physical Education Equipment;
•    Classroom Physical Activity Breaks;
•    Nutrition Education;
•    School Gardens;
•    Healthy Celebrations;
•    And More!

This time of year, our focus is on getting kids ready to go back to school. We give a lot of thought to buying just the right school supplies, reestablishing our school day routine, and packing a safe school lunches. We should also be teaching or reminding kids of tips for staying safe while traveling to and from school.
