A Day in the Life…

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Ames, IA to Iowa State University with Ashley Christenson. The purpose of our trip was to talk to a group of junior and senior students about careers in the area of Public Health, especially with the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative and potentially spark an interest for one or a few of them to apply to be a Resource Contact. I had a chance to briefly speak about the work I do and give the students a look into a “Day in the Life of an Resource Contact.” My talk went a little something like this:
6:45 A.M. – Up and ready for the day, I start my drive to New Hampton for a Walking School Bus to get kids to school on time.

7:15 A.M.- 8:30 A.M. – Walking School Bus, these kids are troopers, walking rain or shine.

8:30- 9:00 A.M. – Check some e-mail quick.

9:00- 10:30 A.M.- Prep food for a cafeteria taste test- I hope the kids will like what I bring today—Most days they do 🙂

11:00- 12:30 P.M.- Serve my taste test, smiles and thumbs up all around!

12:30- 1:00 P.M.- Student Wellness Team meeting. Students come up with ways to increase wellness opportunities throughout their school.

1:00- 2:00 P.M.- Classroom lessons on nutrition and gardening. This past week we talked about sugar and the importance of composting.

2:00- 3:00 P.M.- Walks with classes, check e-mail again, and lesson plan

3:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M.- Wellness Team meeting- discussion on how to build and increase wellness throughout the school day, incorporate the garden into the classroom and increase physical activity throughout the day.

Whew…it’s been a long day, but fun and rewarding at the same time, and totally subject to change tomorrow! I can’t wait to get back to see kids again the next day, hear their stories of how they tried a Rainbow Smoothie or fresh peppers at home and how they decided to play outside after school instead of watch T.V. My job is great and I get to see progress in kids every day. While I’m sad to say that I will not be returning for a second year, this year has definitely been a great experience and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The relationships I have built and taste buds I’ve changed will stick with me through out my life. Thank you Food and Fitness for the great opportunities you have provided for me, I truly appreciate it!
