Waukon Woman Named to Iowa Walking College
Healthiest State Initiative, a nonprofit organization driven by the goal to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation, and the Iowa Department of Public Health announces that 12 Iowans have been accepted into the 2018 Iowa Walking College. Walk-On Waukon group seeking to improve walking access
A group of local residents is taking steps to make Waukon a more inviting place to walk. Walk-On Waukon is a non-profit organization which recently was formed to address the fact that many areas within the city do not have sidewalks. Continue reading
HSI Opens Applications for Iowa Walking College
The Healthiest State Initiative and Active Living Iowa opens applications for the second Iowa Walking College. The Iowa Walking College is an interactive educational program created to increase the number of walking advocates in local communities across the state. The program was launched as a pilot program in 2017 and built around the National Walking College curriculum created by America Walks. Continue reading
WSB Volunteer Recognized by West Union

Statewide Iowa’s Transportation Alternatives Funding
The Iowa Transportation Commission recently approved $756,084 in total funding for three statewide Iowa’s Transportation Alternatives program projects. This program supports projects such as trails, Safe Routes to School, National Scenic Byways, and the preservation or rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities. Continue reading
A Walking College Fellow Walks Past Cancer
Ann Mansfield of Decorah, Iowa was diagnosed in March with stage 2 breast cancer. She quickly began treatment that included surgery, chemotherapy, antibody infusions and radiation. But this nurse, healthy-community advocate and 2016 Walking College fellow was not willing to take her treatment lying down. Rather, Mansfield has used walking as a means of getting through this physically and mentally grueling process. Continue reading
West Union a Leader in Walk-ability
The Walking School Bus (WSB) program in West Union has been a giant success.
Since its inception in 2013, the program has grown from approximately 12 to 20 children walking each day to school to anywhere from 60 to 80 children this year. Just last spring, the Walking School Bus went to five days a week, thanks to the countless hours volunteers put into the program. Continue reading
