Go the Distance May

With school winding down and the weather getting nice, Turkey Valley CSD has been itching to be up and out of their desks. The Wellness Team planned a Go the Distance May event through Live Healthy Iowa to promote physical activity along with school pride and mentorship. The intent was to have the whole school walk around the track, but rainy weather required us to walk the hallways and gyms instead. Continue reading

A Day in the Life…

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Ames, IA to Iowa State University with Ashley Christenson. The purpose of our trip was to talk to a group of junior and senior students about careers in the area of Public Health, especially with the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative and potentially spark an interest for one or a few of them to apply to be a Resource Contact. I had a chance to briefly speak about the work I do and give the students a look into a “Day in the Life of an Resource Contact.” My talk went a little something like this:

We Like to Move It, Move It

As the days grow shorter and colder, it is often hard to find the motivation to get up and moving and stay active. I mean I find no joy in going for a run in -5 degree weather (if you do…more power to ya!). For schools, colder weather also means a lot of indoor recess too. Which leads to stir crazy kids that have to do quiet activities instead of getting to be kids outside. Continue reading
