What’s the most effective way to reduce childhood obesity? That was the topic of research conducted by the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative, Luther College and Mayo Clinic. The research examined the impact of the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative on rates of increase in Body Mass Index in elementary school children families in Allamakee, Clayton, Chickasaw, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek Counties over the course of six years. A garden has been planted outside Carrie Lee Elementary School in Decorah.
The garden, which was planted this spring and is being maintained through the summer, is an extension of the science curriculum at the school and a source of fresh produce for the school lunch program. Carrie Lee students prepared, planted, watered and weeded the garden this spring and summer. Continue reading
