After such a long winter it’s finally here – Garden Time!
At John Cline, each class will have a week that they are responsible for taking care of the garden with me. So far, we’ve added compost and planted peas, with plans to plant radishes and spinach early next week. I’m hoping that we’ll get to try some of our veggies before school is out, but if not, at least every class at John Cline will have had their hands in the garden! Continue reading
The school year is officially coming to a close! This week was Decorah’s last Farm to School/Cross Age Teaching lesson for the year. Continue reading
The past two Wednesdays, John Cline first grade classes had the opportunity to visit the greenhouse across the street at the high school. This was my first experience coordinating a “field trip” and it surprised me how many different things come up just getting kids across the street! Continue reading
This week was Decorah’s third time doing the Cafeteria Coaching program and from where I’m standing, it has been going strong! Continue reading

Even though there is blizzard expected for Northeast Iowa, North Winn Kindergarteners planted their first seeds on Tuesday this week. The class worked together to plant yellow and red onions, as well as leeks. Overall, I think it went pretty well, and I’m hoping that we have onions and leeks come summer. For now, just the smell of the dirt reminded me that warmer, garden-filled times are ahead! I can’t wait! Continue reading

I officially have decided what my favorite lesson is. Popcorn! Even though popcorn is not a stretch for kids to try, this lesson reaffirms why I love what I do. Continue reading
The frigid and snowy Iowa weather has finally started to put a damper on lessons! The past two weeks, school has been cancelled a total of three days, with two early outs also. These cancellations resulted in nearly all of my lessons being cancelled last week and this week. And while it has been great to catch up on lesson planning and other computer work, not being able to see my regular kids is bumming me out. As they say – absence makes the heart grow fonder! The other day, the always thoughtful Mrs. Welper (the kindergarten teacher at North Winn) gave me this picture and writing sample from one of her kids. Continue reading
