Can you believe it? June is already halfway over and here in Northeast Iowa summer is in full swing!
Well, it’s official. The last day of school is complete. While it was just the last day of school until August for the students of the Decorah Community School District, it was my last day of school in Decorah as their Resource Contact and it was pretty bittersweet. While I am looking forward to all the fun that summer brings, I have so much that I’m going miss when I’m no longer the AmeriCorps Service Member for this wonderful school district. Continue reading
Decorah Middle School is now the proud owner of its very own school garden! This past Wednesday, as a part of Mini Course Day, 14 students spent the morning learning about how the garden, green house, and hoop house function at the high school, then came back to the Middle School to plant the four raised beds that are the start of the garden. During the last two weeks, Decorah 1st grade students went on a field trip all the way across the street to the greenhouse at the high school. This was my second time planning this field trip and man, it was so much easier the second time around! I was much less stressed, felt much more capable, and this year, everything went off without a hitch! Continue reading
A couple of weeks ago Johanna Bergan, who is the education and outreach coordinator for the co-op, asked me if I would be willing to help lead a co-op tour and activity for John Cline’s special education classes. Immediately I answered YES! and began thinking about various activities we could do with students with varying levels of ability. Continue reading
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Wisconsin Farm to School Summit in Wisconsin Rapids. I am the only Wisconsinite in our group of RC’s and would love to be involved in Farm to School in the state of Wisconsin after my service is done, so I figured there would be no better opportunity to network with others involved in Farm to School than this summit. As an AmeriCorps service member, one of the perks is that we follow the school calendar and get to take a break for the holidays. I spent my two weeks relaxing, enjoying time with friends and family, cooking, and overall having a leisurely time in southeastern Wisconsin, recharging my batteries for second part of the school year.
