Go the Distance May

With school winding down and the weather getting nice, Turkey Valley CSD has been itching to be up and out of their desks. The Wellness Team planned a Go the Distance May event through Live Healthy Iowa to promote physical activity along with school pride and mentorship. The intent was to have the whole school walk around the track, but rainy weather required us to walk the hallways and gyms instead. Continue reading

A Day in the Life…

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Ames, IA to Iowa State University with Ashley Christenson. The purpose of our trip was to talk to a group of junior and senior students about careers in the area of Public Health, especially with the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative and potentially spark an interest for one or a few of them to apply to be a Resource Contact. I had a chance to briefly speak about the work I do and give the students a look into a “Day in the Life of an Resource Contact.” My talk went a little something like this:

Skates, Snakes and Snowshoes, Oh My!

This week at St. Joe’s is Catholic School’s week and the students and staff is participating in some cool activities promoting physical activity. The school kicked off the week with an All-School skate at the New Hampton Skate Rink on Saturday. Teachers and students were welcomed to an open skate this past Saturday. The afternoon was filled with fun and a little friendly competition! Tuesday was scheduled to allow each class to participate in snowshoeing for about a half hour. However, due to our lack of snow, this was not possible. Who knew we would be wishing for more snow in January! We are hoping for more snow in February for a make-up date. Continue reading
