EARLY CHILDHOOD – Haleisa Johnson

Preschool friends are learning about four words that begin with the letter “P’” – Pigs, Piglets, Pork and Protein. They have learned that pork comes from pigs raised by our local farmers. Thumbs up for the ham and cheese roll-ups they made for taste testing!


Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative is pleased to announce 19 Early Childhood Mini-Grant Awards to local Preschool Schools. These $200 mini awards will be used to support Farm to Early Education in the classroom. The awards will be used in a variety of ways to connect preschool age children to where their food comes from and introducing healthy eating habits. Click here to see the awardees.


FOOD SYSTEMS – Teresa Wiemerslage & Kayla Koether

Winter is the peak for farmer meetings. This season is filled with produce safety meetings in MN, WI and Iowa. The most memorable was a recent training for a group of Amish growers in the home of one of their members. The training was technology-free and featured a wonderful home-cooked meal.


ACTIVE LIVING – Ashley Christensen & April Bril

Upper Explorerland’s Safe Routes to School Program wants to give a shout-out to the Walking School Bus routes that are walking through the winter…..you are inspiring! Students and volunteers interested in joining a WSB this spring can contact April at abril@uerpc.org.


SCHOOL WELLNESS – FoodCorps and AmeriCorps Service members

FoodCorps connects kids to healthy food in school. Our amazing team of AmeriCorps service members make every school healthy by teaching hands-on lessons, promoting healthy school meals, and inspiring a school-wide culture of health. We are currently looking for our next class of leaders who will #ServeUpChange during the 2019-2020 school year. Postville has an open position. Apply by March 15


PARTNER NEWS

Eldorado Eagles 4-H Club members participated in a Healthy Living activity at their February club meeting. The youth made 9 different healthy snacks to share. Recipes came from Spend Smart, Eat Smart website.


5-2-1-0 March Feature: National Nutrition Month
March is National Nutrition Month! This month’s 5-2-1-0 Feature has lots of fun ways you can celebrate and offers tips on how to build healthy eating habits with MyPlate! #HealthyChoicesCount


Healthiest State award winner Jes Wegner met with students at TigerHawk Connections Learning Center to brainstorm ways she should spend her $1,000 prize. Here are some of the ideas they came up with:
Standing desks for school      Buy a trampoline       Build a skate
Obstacle course supplies       Plant a vegetable garden

The mail-order meal boxes are so attractive! But local farmers have been delivering fresh food to communities for a long time. When you sign up for a CSA share, you help support a local business! Shares are filling up so sign up soon. Find a local farmer near you.
