Postville 4th graders recently had a “let’s jam!” lesson.
They learned about different steps of the food system by completing important roles in the process of making strawberry jam.
There was a ‘harvester and washer’ at the farm, a ‘slicer,’ a ‘mixer,’ and a ‘packager’ and ‘label-maker’ at the factory and last, a ‘truck driver’ that delivered our jam to the super market.
Later in the afternoon, students tasted their jam with bread. This activity paired well with the 4th grade lesson on Henry Ford and the assembly line, as we thought about how each step and person involved in our food system gives us the food that we eat.
The quick jam recipe includes:
1 cup strawberries
1 Tbs. lemon juice
1 Tbs Honey or Sugar
1 Tbs Chia seeds
Mix well, and allow to chill for one hour.
