Kids’ Club Was Ready for RAGBRAI

Guest post by Becky Rea, K-12 Program Coordinator, ISU Extension and Outreach

RAGBRAI XLV came to Waukon and students were prepared! Upper Explorerland partnered with the Ride Right Committee and ISU Extension and Outreach to bring the bike rodeo to East and West Elementary and Waterville’s Kids Club.

Traci Byrnes, Ride Right Committee Member, explained what RAGBRAI was and shared some important safety information for the youth during RAGBRAI’s travels through our county. Information shared included being careful opening car doors and keeping their own bikes at home along with the fascinating fact that RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest multi day recreation bicycle tour in the world!

Students were fitted for free bike helmets with the help of Troy Carter, Safe Routes to School Director for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, and participated in a round robin style of activities. They learned proper hand signals, bike safety and the health benefits of biking. They practiced their hand signals and riding etiquette while completing the obstacle course and made delicious smoothies on the blender bike.

Thank you to PSST (Parents Supporting Students and Teachers) for volunteering their times, Hardee’s and Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative for making this event a success!
