Notes from the Field…with Denise Menne, Fayette County Early Education Associate

Warm rays of sunshine, a bit of rain showers, singing birds and flitting robins…spring is finally here!  It is time to dust off the bikes and air up the tires, lace up and the sneakers and get outside!  Fayette County has lots to offer with many opportunities to eat fresh and local as well as to get out and explore.  We have state, county, and city parks perfect for an afternoon of play and activity.   In the coming week’s Notes from the Field will spotlight some of Fayette County’s great outdoor areas.

This time’s featured park is Hauth Park in Hawkeye.

The park has many great features including a paved walking trail and two modern restroom facilities on each side of the park.  There is also a baseball/softball diamond with bleachers and lights for night games.  The local Boy Scout troop also offers snacks and refreshments during ball games.

Four open air shelter houses with wooden picnics tables make Hauth park an ideal  place for family reunions, summer grilling, and outdoor gatherings.  Shelters can be reserved or you can just show up and get your event started!

Additional park features include a horseshoe pit, tennis, and basketball courts-also with lights, and a variety of playground equipment suitable for multiple ages and ability levels.

If you are visiting on a Tuesday evening stop in at the Hawkeye Farmer’s market.  Vendors offer baked goods, preserves, and fresh, locally grown, seasonal produce at great values! Don’t rule out the park in the winter months-the tennis court becomes an ice skating rink with the availability to rent skates and hockey equipment in town.
