For the month of January and February, students from New Hampton and St. Joe’s have been learning out the parts of plants and how they can eat all the parts of a plant by eating a variety of vegetables.
We started out our lesson by going over the basic parts of a plant by drawing a flower on the board and labeling the different parts and discussing their function. For grades K-2, I read them the book, “The Vegetables We Eat” by Gail Gibbons, which does a great job of explaining about the wide variety of vegetables. Grades 3-6 were able to create their own plant, some were very creative and drew zombie plants and even Iowa Hawkeye plants. Students shared their drawing and a little bit about where their plant lives and what it needs to survive.
We ended our lesson with a taste test of the parts of plants. It was a big thumbs up! Here are some pictures from one of my lessons with 1st and 2nd graders.
