The life of a new Food and Fitness Resource Contact: lots of meetings, lots of new names and introductions, lots of curious looks from kids, lots of buysness… but LOTS of FUN!
I’ve already had a blast diving into my work at St. Joseph’s community school in New Hampton and can’t wait to get into Turkey Valley schools.
Here are some fun things we’ve already done at St. Joe’s:
From the moment that I stepped into St. Joe’s, I could already tell that they were champions at wellness and really cared about making steps towards active living! I was there for less than half an hour and right away got involved in wellness: I was able to attend their HUSSC bronze award ceremony and there was so much excitment! They were 1 of the 82 schools in Iowa that received this award for the 2014-2015 school year! Great job St. Joe’s!
Along with lots of new introductions and meeting, I have also been visiting different classes to get to know the students and teachers and bringing a special taste-testing treat along with me: Rainbow peppers from their own school garden!
I talked with the 1st and 2nd graders about why peppers are healthy and why they are different colors. Then we talked about how the different colors do different things for your body to help you grow up big and strong so you can play hard!! We tried green, red, yellow and orange peppers.
It was so rewarding when later on in the day, some of the students asked me to remind them again why they should eat yellow peppers and then asked if we could all go out to the garden together! It’s neat to be making an impact already – only day 2 at St. Joe’s!
Overall, I am thrilled to be working with the Food and Fitness Initiative. It can be a lot at times, but I am so passionate and excited about the work we do! Let’s continue to get kids connected to healthy food and exercise so they can grow up strong!
Here’s to a great year!
