Bring on the summer!

Hello readers of the Northeastern Iowa’s Food and Fitness Initiative blog! My name is Brynne Stellner and I am Luther College’s summer intern for the Food and Fitness Initiative of Northeastern Iowa. I am thrilled for this wonderful opportunity to work with area Early Childhood  programs, assist in area garden clubs, and become involved  in the numerous aspects of FFI that strive to incluther basketballrease healthy, locally grown foods and encourage active living opportunities around Northeastern Iowa!

 

Throughout the summer, I will write weekly blog posts relaying my experiences in the area schools, gardens, and other research related activities I will be undergoing. I hope to leave you with an exciting account of my experience in helping Northeastern Iowa continue to become a healthier, happier, and more active place for families to live! But first, let me tell you a little about myself.

 

As I said, I attend Luther College and I will be a junior in the fall (yikes!). I am majoring in English with a minor in Secondary Education. After graduating, I hope to teach high school English and attend graduate school. I play basketball on the Luther Women’s Basketball Team, and find much joy in the competitive environment basketball brings. When I am not busy with my studies or basketball, I enjoy being outside, reading, babysitting, coaching, volunteering, and going on crazy adventures with my family and friends!

 

My mom Stacie, a teacher of 25 years, has been a HUGE inspiration in my decision to pursue teaching. Fortunately, I share her passion for teaching, love of children, and healthy lifestyle choices—so naturally this job is a perfect fit!

 

Fun Food Fact of the Week: Eating bananas can cheer you up!

 

I’m sure you all know that bananas are a great source of potassium. But did you know bananas are the only fruit to contain tryptophan (amino acid) and Vitamin B6, which together the body converts to serotonin, the mood-elevating brain transmitter? In other words, eating a banana is not only a healthy choice, but it also may boost your mood!
