My name is Katie and I am an AmeriCorps member serving in Turkey Valley CSD and St. Joseph’s Catholic school in New Hampton this year. I graduated from Luther College in May with a double major in Biology and Psychology with an emphasis in Human Movement and Exercise Science. With that being said, I LOVE moving! I was a four-year letter winner on the swim team at Luther and still have a passion for it today. I am really excited to help my schools incorporate more movement throughout the school day.
I am originally from Waukon, IA and have loved Northeast Iowa since I was little. I developed a love of whole, homegrown foods as a kid. I can still vividly remember picking tomatoes with my mom in the garden, husking sweet corn in the heat of July, and long combine rides with my grandpa in the fall. My love for eating healthy and staying active has evolved as I’ve grown up and I am excited to share my passion for food and fitness with today’s youth.
The past few weeks have been awesome in my schools. Everyone has been so welcoming and I have already gotten to do some great activities with kids. It’s great to see how inquisitive kids are about the foods that they eat and how they are more apt to try things if they make it themselves. I’m looking forward to a great year. I can already tell it is going to be!
