Three northeast Iowa men have been nominated as one of more than 60 people nominated this year as a “Person to Watch in 2014” by Des Moines Register readers. All three men have connection to NE Iowa Food & Fitness (FFI) activities.
Dr. Liang Chee Wee, Decorah. The Northeast Iowa Community College President received the nomination for having “transformed the campus’ culture.” President Wee was among the first to institute a tuition freeze for the 2013-2014 academic year. He also has introduced “interest-based bargaining” between college employees and the administration. Wee serves on the FFI Regional Council.
John Carver, Cresco. The superintendent of the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District has implemented several changes to help improve the quality of education in the district. Earlier this school year, the district received the Gold Award of the Healthier US School Challenge.
James Frantzen, Elma. He recently received the Best Young Leaders in Sustainable Agriculture Award. Frantzen comes from several generations of farmers; he is the fifth. Frantzen grew up on his family’s organic farm and then purchased his own farm in 2009 in Elma, Iowa. There he grows organic corn, soybeans, small grains such as wheat and oats, hay, and pasture while raising beef cows and hogs.
